This image is when Bowie was going through his alter ego stage (when he claimed he was Ziggy Stardust) and I feel it says a lot about his personality at that time of his life. Having been heavily hooked on dangerous drugs, he often appeared to not be involved in reality, being in his own world. Therefore, by having an alto ego it may have illustrated a slightly multi-personality effect brought on by the drugs. Also, Bowie is a very creative person and loves to explore eccentricities both musically and visually. The bright colouring showed this, and his vivid hair colour soon become one of his trademarks, propelling him to become one of the most unique fashion icons of his day.
This image shows Bowie home lifestyle, and gives a rare insight into his private life. Having been wild in previous years, Bowie managed to settl down and is a commited family man. This emphasise his change when he goes from his personal life compared with his hectic performance life.
Always the one to shock, Bowie liked to venture visually as his image was something that he felt he could use to show his personality. Many of his photo shoots contained weird backgrounds with contraversal themes, and his costumes were equally great and outrageous. Bowie also sparked a glam rock sense and like to stand out from the crowd. In this image Bowie demonstrates how he can always take centre stage regardless of the odd surroundings.
As he grew older, Bowie toned down significantly, and began to present himself in a more naturalistic way, perhaps suggesting he didn't need to cover behind an image and that he was finally contempt with himself, especially as he had managed to quit drugs. The image here shows a very vulnerable side to Bowie, taking away the colour that he was always related to. There is also a very dreary essence to the image, perhaps hinting towards how drugs have made him weak, and yet he wants to focus on other things in life and wont let his past get him down.
An older Bowie, this image tells a lot about his character. The most noticable feature we see is that of his different eye colour, which is something that Bowie is well known for and often used to describe his image (as well as his bright hair). It seemed that even something given to him naturally gave him a certain uniqueness. His smile also shows a lot, as in many of his photo's he doesn't really smile in a natural sense, unless when he was on drugs in his younger years. It clearly shows he is much happier now, and feels comfortable with himself and his lifestyle.
His earing is another significant feature, as it shows that he still hints towards a youthful charisma, as well as having a rock star edge.
By backing himself into a corner, Bowie's vulnerabilty shines in this photo, and shows Bowie more toned down with the black and white imagery. It also shows his eccentric fashion sense, and his involvement to the glam rock era.
This image wouldn't be too shocking for most Bowie fans if this were considered his latest image, however it is when he was playing a role in the film 'The Labyrinth'.Bowie acting in many films showing his diversity from music to acting. He also produced many.
One of the most significant films he was involved with was 'Christianne F', a german film about a 14 year old heroine addict, who when showing glimpse of innocence would return to her passion for Bowie's music. A true story, and one in which Bowie probably got involved with due to being able to relate to not only suffering from drug addiction, but suffering in Berlin, the same location as the film.
This image shows that Bowie was not afraid to stand out, even if it did mean wearing eccentric make-up. It shows that Bowie was very confident and would present himself in a way that would make him memorable.
This final image I chose to present due to it showing Bowie in his most naturalistic and comfortable environment; when he was in the presence of music.Still keeping the rock star imagery, his smile emmits his happiness when he is around a musical instrument, showing that that is what makes him who he is.
Bowie was an iconic musician, who even though had his problems, went through fashion stages and became a family man, he still had one constant and that was his devotion to music and his ability to inspire others.
