MySpace Analysis - Lady Gaga

I am going to be looking at the MySpace of Lady Gaga. The reason I choose to look at her MySpace, is not only because she is a successful popular artist, but also because she has her very own distinctive style. We would like to represent Poppy in a similar way, with her totally own style and image which Lady Gaga does very well. She is a very eccentric artist and her MySpace will represent this and will give us a starting point to how to represent Poppy and show her style successfully. This MySpace Layout is quiet plain, with a black background and stand out font. The layout is simple to follow, with 10 links across the top of page structuring the MySpace and making it easy to use. The headings include News, Bio, Tour, Photo’s, and Store, all of which is relevant information that fans would want to know. These links however lead directly to the relevant pages of her official website, away from MySpace. This is a good way of doing it, as connecting the two together with give much more information and make it easier.

The fonts are all kept to similar colours, with Red and White being the main. This is good because not only does it stand out and suit the Black background, but red also has a big impact making it more dramatic and stand out. Her profile picture which is an image of her album covers with her on. This is her main image she has chosen for the MySpace.Further down the MySpace after the writing there is a long scroll down of images of Lady Gaga. There is a variety, however they are all advertisements. For example, her new album, ringtones, tour posters, sign up to newsletters, all trying to sell lady Gaga as an artist and sell her to the market. This is one of the biggest purposes of her MySpace, which is why it contains so many advertisements on the main page. This could be different with our MySpace page. Lady Gaga is an established successful and popular artist, so she has an established audience and fan base which our artist will not have. We will have to focus much more on introducing ours into the audience and setting up her image.

At the top of her MySpace is 4 big advertisements taking up a lot of space. These include images of lady Gaga and large bold stand out font. The first is a competition to meet her. This is a large advertisement, as it is trying to grab the attention of the fans so they enter it. ‘enter for a chance to win’ is capitalised and in red, so again it stands out trying to pull people’s attention to it so they enter. Underneath this, there is then 3 more advertisements. The next is also quiet large, and it advertising her as an artist and her new album. The main writing is large, bold and capitalised as it is making a big impact in showing who this is and what her new album is with the release date. There is a picture either side of the main text. Both show her as an artist, however they are very styled images and are shown in black and white. The first is her with her unique style with a big white wig, and the second is her in long brown wig with her makeup done so it looks like she had been crying. These represent her main image well, and offers the idea of mysterious but also her dramatic style.

The MySpace includes a media player of her songs, which is good because her fans may come on wanting to listen to her music and find out her newest release etc. It also shows her work as an artist which is the point of the MySpace. It has a blog section with links taking you into a short blog about what Lady Gaga is currently up to and is a good way to keep fans up to date with what is going on with her etc. Underneath this there is then another box with a long list of tour dates. This is important as it is advertising her being on tour in which people might then be interested in going to see her. The writing included on this MySpace is very straightforward. There is no direct writing to the audience; it is just presenting the basic information about her. More detail is found through the links leading to pages on her official website. Basic information about her music and image is found on the front page under ‘general information’ which all MySpace’s have. It gives a little basic information about her inspirations and suggests what her music is like. For example, underneath influences is a long list of people and things that influence her. The writing in the advertisements is all persuasive and pull people in, which is the point of them. For example, ‘new school supplies!’ by having the explanation mark, it makes it seem exciting and good which will make people think about it. It is also appealing to the audience, as a wide number of fans will still be in school so therefore this will appeal to them and is selling the brand of Lady Gaga. As she is already established and successful, she will already have a fan base and an audience. By looking at this MySpace and also considering the overall image of Lady Gaga, I think she has a wide audience. The MySpace layout is fairly general and does appeal to a variety of people. She has 816471 friends, this includes fans and contacts. This is a good way of advertising and becoming well known, by adding people and letting them see your main homepage, especially more for unknown bands as it is building up how many people know you.I think that this is a good example of a MySpace and has a plain but yet effective layout.
